Trouble Shooting
Wireless Networks
Let's start with the basics of wireless
networking. Your router and NIC (Network Interface Card) are transmitters and
receivers. Electrical Motors, TV's, etc will effect this transmit/receive
process. (Tech Call) Customers wireless network
worked fine until he turned on his fan. (Tech Call)
Tech couldn't get a signal thru a wall that had the metal studing.
First thing you want to do after putting in your
NIC Card is to see if the service is working. Go to Control Panel, System,
Device Manager and look for that installed NIC. Do you see it? If something
yellow or red is next to it you have a IRQ conflict or more likely the driver is
incorrectly installed. Click the device, then update the driver with the disk
that came with your NIC.(If your on the internet by other means) download the
newest driver.(Tech Call) An MCSE (Microsoft
Certified Systems Engineer) calls about a driver problem. It seems that Plug and
PRAY wanted to load a Windows 98 driver into a Windows XP machine. Solution is
to watch closely on the driver Plug and Pray picks to install, its not always
the right driver.
Now that your assured that connectivity on your
NIC is working properly, Lets look at your settings of that network card. Go to
Network Connections go to General default) then click properties below. These
are your Protocols. TCP/IP should definitely be checked and Printer and file
sharing in you want to share your printer and files You make what files and to
whom available with further settings, your secure). The other protocols Apple
Talk if you have a Macintosh you want to talk to, or UNIX, or NWLink.
(Tech Call) Repairing a network in Apollo Beach, A
Tech who besides having a switch instead of a router, he had NWLink, Apple Talk
and other services and protocols checked. This is a big waste of system
resources and will slow your system down. Also Networks shouldn't run $2000 for
6 computers and should have a router.
Now that your protocols are
correctly set, drivers and services running properly after you have checked it,
its time to talk to your router. To get in to your wireless router go to your
browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) type in your internet gateway. What's
That, Easy. Click on your Network Connections and click you network card. Look
at support, there's your default gateway. Type that IP address into your
browser. Hopefully a login box comes on. If not make sure your router is on, and
the lights are on. Restart your router by turning off for 30 seconds. restart.
Hopefully this fixes the problem. If Not Go thru the above, try another NIC
card, or a Different Router. Make Sure your in close proximity to you router
with the computer your trying to connect, to assure proper connection. If your
still having the problem call us. We'll try our Routers and Nic Cards to see
where the problem is.
