Setting Up Your Router
You can be fairly confident that your NIC
is installed correctly
(review
installing a NIC) by the lights being normally green and blinking. Depending
on the NIC you can have yellow when the router is not totally set up.
Regardless.
Go to your Browser and type in the IP address of
your Default Gateway (Review Installing a NIC). A login screen will come up.
Make sure all pop-up stoppers, and firewalls have been disabled. Each Router
Manufacturer has there own default logins. Admin as the username is almost
always the default, and the password is either blank or admin, Not Always. Refer
to your Routers documents or there website for the precise password.
Once your inside your router
there lots of important settings. Change your password and username if possible
first. If your logged into the internet thru DSL or Cable
(We Recommend Verizon for there low price, and excellent service) your live
on the internet. All hackers know the default Gateways used by most router
manufacturers and the default passwords. Changing those your ready to go. With
wireless Encryption becomes very important. 64 bit or 128 are the norms right
now. 64 bits is fine if your storing routine information even credit card data.
Remember the encryption code must be entered in
your computer at the NIC card or in Network Connections. Your router must
contain the EXACT same sequence to work. If one Hexadecimal number or letter is
off, your connection won't work. You will NOT need to reboot your system after
the settings are made. Another setting that's rather important in Wireless
networking security is MAC Address Filtering. Simply you just ad your physical
NIC address ( go to start, run, in the dos window type in cmd, and at the prompt
type in ipconfig. this will give you your Mac address, IP Address, etc. You'll
need to enter in the MAC address of all computers you want allowed to connect to
your router. If you type in a wrong address, that computer will be prohibited
from entering your network. That's Security. There's many different settings on
a router and we've touched on just a few of them.
If you lose your username or password you can
reset your system back to default. WARNING if you do reset it make sure to reset
the computer your using to connect to the router to its default settings. No
encryption.
Wireless networks sometimes burp meaning you
might have to reset all your settings, it happens. Be patient waiting for the
connection to be made on boot up. Firewalls are notorious for stopping the
transmits and receives between router and the NIC card. Just Turn it off.
Another easy reset is to disable the nic then enable it.
